My seventh lesson (Numeracy lesson) (11-10-2012)

In this lesson, Dr. Nail came to observe me which was planned for late in this day. I felt that I did an excellent job with the children. This lesson also was started at 11:00 am.

I started the lesson by reviewing with the children about the number of the week (3). They were writing the number by their fingers in the air without waiting me to ask them about how we can write it. They just wanted to show me that they can recognize and write the number. I made their learning active also by playing the video song for them. During the video song playing, I asked them about how many things they can see in the video. They were trying to give me their answers before each other. All of these were positive things that I noticed during the whole group section but there was also a negative point which was playing 2 thing from the computer. I think this took a long time for the children.

I grouped them into the different activities by color grouping. I applied the activity for 2 groups of children by showing them the product that I modeled for them. I gave each child the materials that they need to use. I let them design their work as they want so they can be creative.

The disadvantage that I noticed during the focus activity is that the children found shaping the number by the material that I provided was too difficult. However, when I thought deeply, I recognized that the activity was appropriate for them. A common reason is that it improved the children’s fine motor skills as they were trying and most of them did shape the number at the end. Another reason is that the children were very focused while they were shaping the number and happy and pleased after few times failing.

My sixth lesson (Literacy lesson) (11-10-2012)

In this lesson, the whole section was less interactive and active than the previews lesson. This is because of that in this lesson, I played an online story from the computer instead of having the hard copy and read it by myself and make it as active as I could. However, the children were very creative while the child in the story said let’s make the letter T shape. Some of them drew the letter by their fingers in the air while some of them created the letter by crossing their fingers to make the shape of the letter.

After the story time, I tried to encourage them to be active by the flash cards game and the bag. In this activity, I provided the flash cards that have pictures started with the letter T in a bag. I asked children one by one to get a card from the bag and say the name of the picture. This made the children so active and they tried to interact and cooperate with me. After playing the game, I sing a song that start with the letter T which is (Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear). This song helped the children’s gross motor skills because it supported them to move and dance.

After the whole group activity, I grouped the children into 5 different groups. The group that I had, I modeled the activity for the children and I gave the instruction for the children about how to do the activity. The children had different ideas about being creative and how to glue and stick the pictures on the letter and also in which color they could use to color the letter T. The children were very helpful when they were helping each other to find the appropriate picture that matched the letter.

My fifth lesson (Numeracy lesson) (10-10-2012)

In general, since this lesson was planned for late in the day, I felt that I did a an excellent job with the children. This is because of they were just finished from their snack time and it was 11:00 am and they were very very active and I thought that I will never get their attention. However, it happened the opposite of what I thought about. The behavior management was good when some children swarmed they rug, I stopped the activity till they were cooperative.

I started the whole section with asking them about what is our number of the week and I asked on child to show me the number from the dice. After that I let the children worked collaboratively by find and search game where I choose 2 children to search for the number 3 card around the classroom. The game encouraged the children to be excited to look for the number. Two were the searcher, but all of them participated by helping them and pointing at the cards that they can see. The children even found some more number 3 in different places that I hadn’t hidden. The use of a musical video was good for this time of day because it helped them to calm down after being very active. I engaged them with the song by asking them some questions.

In the focus activity, I provided a flower model for them that was made from ice-cream wooden stick and 3 hearts that have numbers 1 to 3 written on them. This activity was good and most of the children were able to write the number and glue the 3 hearts on the wooden stick. All of them were able to count how many hearts do they have and recognize the numbers on these hearts. The children were creative in the activity because some of the did not do the flower shape, but they glued the hearts randomly on the stick which very creative thing from them.
