The aim is to integrate literacy and numeracy lessons together in one lesson.
Rationale
The lessons in KG school are too short to plan and teach literacy and numeracy lessons individually. Moreover, the number of the children in each classroom is too big, for example I had 5 groups of 5 children. Therefore, it was difficult for me as a teacher to finish the focus activity with all groups. I need to combine numeracy and literacy lessons together, so I can finish the focus activity for all children as well as let them know and understand that all subjects are related together. Furthermore, certain word based games combine both skills in a fun way by building spoken skills to play the game and numeracy skills through working out the scores.
Strategies
•Read stories that support children’s language as well as numeracy skills.
•Play
games with the whole group of children or with small groups that link the
target language and numeracy skills that I need them to learn and use, such as
shopping games, cooking games … etc.
•Sing
with the children songs that have literacy and numeracy language. Such as, 5
little monkeys, 10 red apples… etc.
•Plan
the focus activities that link both literacy and numeracy outcomes of the
week/day.
Mentor Observation
Self evaluation
Week 1:
o The
lollipop activity was an activity that I planned for the literacy lesson
because the letter L /l was the letter of the week that the children need to
learn. However, it was numeracy lesson because the children were mixing the
colors that they want and the activity taught them the colors that they can get
from mixing different colors.
o The
letter L for lemon activity was also a literacy activity that I planned for the
same reason and also it taught them some numeracy skills of combining 2 groups
of objects to show addition. This was the outcome of the week for the numeracy
lessons.
Week 2:
o The fish coloring activity was
a numeracy activity where the children had to identify which fish is big / small / long
/ short. Moreover, it was a literacy activity which is an object that start
with the letter F. (The letter of the week).
Week 4:
o The
dot to dot goose activity was planned for the literacy lesson because it was one of the
word that they have to learned for the letter G. However, it encouraged them to
review the numbers from 1-9.
