Aim 5

The aim is to try to get all of the children's attention before starting the lesson and  make the length of circle time match the children's attention span.

 Rationale

I worry about the children’s attentions span because I  may lose the attention of even the best-behaved and brightest young children after a long time teaching when they are sitting on the floor.  Very complaint children may still remain seated longer, but they may not actively participate in learning during a  long time being seated.
Strategies
Become reflective and aware of the students’ attention and reaction. Make sure when I pan for the first whole group activity that there is a clear focus, that the children are actively involved and that it does not take more than 7 or 8 minutes.
Sing specific songs to get the children’s attentions because most of them like singing songs.
Don’t be afraid to change the lesson plan to maximize students’ attention and learning.

Mentor Observation

Self evaluation

Week 1:

o Playing the movement games (Fly like ladybugs, Fall like leaves, Do legs exercises, Lay on the floor and make body L’s.) encourage me to get the children’s attention because they all engaged with it and also they were waiting for the instructions about what action they have to do after.

o Playing ‘shape and seek’ game where I put some common shapes on a piece of paper and in teams the children have to find examples of those shapes in their environment . E.g. the clock could be an example of a circle shape. The children were focused on the lesson and I could got their attention because the game was interested to them and were interacting with each other.

Week 3:

o I sang a new song for the children which was unfamiliar for them that helped me to get their attention. This is because of that they were ceruse to know this song and to learn how to sing it.

o In the numeracy lesson, the children gave me their attention because they were surprised from what I were doing. I got some girls that had different hair lengths and encouraged children to order them from long to short. After that, I got some boys and helped the other children to order them from tall to short. When I asked them some questions and encouraged them to order the children that I have chosen, they learned the outcome so easily because I didn’t loos their attention and the length of the game matched their attention span.

Week 4:

o I played a memory game with the children which to print the objects that start with the letter G in flash cards and make a copy of each card. I placed the cards upside down on the floor and encouraged the children to play the game and name each object. This game matched the children attention span because I made the appropriate number of copies and the children didn’t take long time to finish it. Moreover, the game got the children attention because they were waiting for their turn to play and also to wen.
o I played a guessing game called “I’m Thing of Something” by supporting the children to use words that begin with the heard G. I got the children attention because they were thinking critically about the description of the object that I needed them to guess.

 Week 5:

o The puppet show supported me to get the children’s attention because it was a new thing for them and a new way to start the lesson with. The children engaged with the puppet and they were talking to the puppet instead of me. This is because of that the conversation started from the puppet. The show also matched their attention span which didn’t last for more than 10 minutes.
